Programmes

The Malay Language Unit is dedicated to nurturing students’ proficiency and appreciation of the Malay language and culture. We aim to create a vibrant and engaging learning environment where students develop strong communication skills and a deep connection to their heritage.

Our Approaches

1. Support – We provide differentiated learning to cater to students’ varying abilities, ensuring that every learner receives the necessary guidance and encouragement to improve their language skills.

2. Enrich – Our interactive programs, such as storytelling sessions, cultural activities, and reading programs, help deepen students’ love for the Malay language beyond the classroom.

3. Enhance – We incorporate ICT tools, gamification, and experiential learning to make the learning process fun, meaningful, and relevant in today’s digital world.

Through these approaches, we strive to build confident and effective Malay language users who appreciate and uphold the beauty of the language and culture.

READING MUM

Our Reading Mum Programme for Primary 1 and 2 students has been a wonderful success, thanks to the dedication of our parent volunteers and the enthusiasm of our young learners. This initiative, designed to instill a love for reading from an early age, has provided students with additional support in developing their literacy skills in a fun and engaging environment.

Throughout the programme, parent volunteers guided students through reading aloud sessions, and one-on-one reading practice. These sessions not only helped students improve their pronunciation and comprehension but also built their confidence in expressing themselves through reading. Students eagerly participated in the sessions, showing great enthusiasm. 

A heartfelt thank you to all the parent volunteers who contributed their time and effort to this meaningful programme. Your support has made a difference in the students’ learning journey, and we truly appreciate your involvement.

Teacher Developed Lesson Packages

Writing Package - Mahir Menulis

Our school's Malay Language Writing Package is designed to develop our P1-P6 students' writing skills progressively, nurturing them into confident and creative writers. The package incorporates a variety of approaches to support students at different stages of their writing journey. The packages introduces students to elements of a story such as developing a plot and enhancing their writing with the use of imageries, peribahasa and ending their story with a BANG!

Through this comprehensive writing package, we aim to equip our students with essential writing skills, empowering them to express their thoughts confidently and creatively in the Malay language.

Oral Package - Saya Bijak Bertutur 

Our Saya Bijak Bertutur (I Can Speak) programme is designed to develop our P1-P6 students’ oral communication skills progressively, building their confidence and fluency in speaking Malay. This whole-school approach equips students with essential speaking skills through structured oral packages tailored to different proficiency levels.

The programme introduces students to key aspects of effective communication, such as pronunciation, intonation and articulation. It also provides opportunities for students to engage in interactive conversations, storytelling, role-playing and structured discussions, allowing them to express their thoughts clearly and confidently in various contexts.

Through Saya Bijak Bertutur, we aim to nurture articulate and expressive speakers who can communicate their ideas effectively in the Malay language.

Interactive Writing Package

The Interactive Writing Programme for Primary 5–6 students is designed to develop students' writing skills by exposing them to various graphic stimuli and text prompts. This structured approach encourages active participation, creativity, and critical thinking. We provide our students with a framework to enable them to craft their messages and to ensure information required is written correctly in their response. By the end of the programme, students will be able to compose short messages or notes based on their understanding and interpretation of the given stimuli or text.

Enrichment

Hari Raya Celebration

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a joyous occasion celebrated in our school to foster cultural appreciation and unity among students and staff. Through various engaging activities, students gain a deeper understanding of the significance of this festive season while embracing the values of togetherness and gratitude.

To give an insight to how our Muslims celebrate Hari Raya in their homes, a pop-up booth was set up in the school canteen. The pop-up booth has an array of displays such as hari raya costumes, delicacies and even the various hari raya kueh which is usually served during Hari Raya. Students went around the displays and answered questions based on the displays.

The concert includes lively performances, such as traditional Malay dance and music, showcasing the rich heritage of the Malay community.

To bring the festive spirit into the workplace and spread cheer among colleagues, setting up a Hari Raya photobooth in the staffroom is a fantastic idea. It not only creates a fun and engaging environment but also strengthens bonds among staff members while capturing precious memories.

RAKAN BAHASA 2025 

Majlis Bahasa Melayu Singapura (MBMS) organises Bulan Bahasa annually with the aim of encouraging the use and appreciation of the Malay language, foster a strong community spirit, build cultural identity and instil community pride in the use of the Malay language in Singapore through various programmes and activities.

As part of Bulan Bahasa, students who are passionate about the Malay language and culture are appointed for a year as Rakan Bahasa to be role models for the Malay language to their peers, friends and families.

Students nominated as Rakan Bahasa will be given opportunities to refine their presentation skills, build confidence and appreciate the Malay culture as a Malay language ambassador. A myriad of language activities also awaits this year’s Rakan Bahasa.

MTL FORTNIGHT

The MTL Fortnight Programme is a platform to engage students in the learning and appreciation of their MT languages outside the context of their lessons. Usually conducted in conjunction with Bulan Bahasa (Malay Language Month), it allows students opportunities to participate in various activities catered to their level. We collaborated with the other two Mother Tongue Department for our Middle Primary Level activities.

Our Primary one students had an enjoyable session trying to make the traditional kuih normally served during Hari Raya festive. They had the chance to make the kuih tart, makmur and kuih siput. Primary two students were exposed to a few Malay Traditional Games such as Congkak, Jelon, Chapteh, Ye-Yeh and Batu Seremban. Our Primary three and four students had a collaboration activity with the other two Mother Tongue Department. They had the opportunity to learn the various spices used in the cooking from the different ethnic groups and different traditional kuih respectively. The primary three students ended the activity with making scented sachets from the spices and the primary four had the opportunity to taste the different ethnic kuih during their recess prepared by our parent volunteers.

Sayembara Bahasa

Sayembara Bahasa is a competition organised by the cluster involving six primary schools with the aim of providing a platform for our students to showcase their talents. It also aims to develop the love for our mother tongue in our students. This competition provided a good opportunity for students to celebrate, learn and practice the use of our Malay Language.
